Terms of Use

Last updated 11 September 2026

Plain terms for using Shotwell. Using the product means you accept them.

What Shotwell is

A planning tool. It scores photography income paths against the skills, gear, time and goal you enter, recommends one, and gives you a four-week plan and the arithmetic behind it.

It is not a marketplace, a client, an agency, or an employer. It does not find you work, contact anyone on your behalf, or handle money between you and your clients.

What the numbers mean

Every figure in the product is a planning model built from what you entered and a suggested starting price. Income estimates are examples, not guarantees, not predictions, and not a promise of anything.

The recommendation engine is a documented heuristic. Two people who answer identically get the same result. That makes it consistent — it does not make it right about your city, your market, or your week.

Gear verdicts are the same kind of thing: a judgement from your inputs and a set of stated assumptions. Deciding to buy or not buy equipment is your decision, and the consequences are yours.

Nothing in Shotwell is financial, legal, tax or business advice.

Your account

One account per person. Keep your password to yourself; anything done through your account is treated as done by you. Tell us if you think someone else has access.

You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live, and at least 16.

What you put in

Your work, your offers, your notes and your client records stay yours. We store and process them to run the product for you, and for nothing else — we do not sell them, share them, or use them to train anything.

You are responsible for what you record about other people, and for using outreach in a way that follows the law where you and they are. Do not use Shotwell to send bulk unsolicited messages.

Paying

Free is a real plan with no time limit. Pro is a subscription, billed monthly or annually through Stripe, and renews until you cancel.

Cancel any time from the billing portal in Settings. You keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for. We do not refund part-used periods by default, but if something went genuinely wrong, write to us.

One-time purchases are exactly that: bought once and kept, independent of any subscription. Cancelling Pro does not take them away.

Nothing you have created is ever deleted because a plan changed. Free limits apply to making something new, never to what already exists.

If prices change, existing subscribers are told before it affects them.

Availability

Shotwell is a small product and is provided as it is. We try to keep it up and correct, and we cannot promise it will never be down, never lose a keystroke, or never be wrong.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost income, lost work, or decisions made using the product — including purchases you make or do not make after reading a verdict here.

Ending it

You can delete your account at any time from Settings, and it takes effect immediately.

We may suspend or close an account that is being used to abuse the service or other people. If we do, we will say why.

Changes

If these terms change materially, the date at the top changes and anyone with an account is told. Continuing to use Shotwell after that means the new terms apply.

These pages describe what Shotwell actually does, written from the code. They have not been reviewed by a lawyer, and they are not a substitute for advice about your own jurisdiction.
