How It Works

From what you own to what you do next

Four steps. The whole point is to end up with something to do today, not a dashboard to look at.

  1. Step 1

Tell us what you already have

What you shoot, what you're good at, the gear in your bag, the hours you can spare, where you work and what you want to earn. Seven questions, one at a time.

  2. Step 2

    Get one recommended path

Not a list of twenty options. One path, scored against your answers, with the reasoning shown so you can disagree with it.

  3. Step 3

See the maths to your goal

A starting offer, a price, and how many clients that means. Concrete enough to act on this week.

  4. Step 4

    Do the next thing

A weekly plan, an offer you can send, the client types to approach, and a place to track whether it worked.

A worked example

One photographer, start to paid

Six answers in, six steps out. This is the whole product — read it in thirty seconds and decide whether it is for you.

Everything to the right follows from those six answers.

  1. Recommendation

    Local Business Content

Scored above the other seven paths on skills, gear, hours and goal — photos and short clips a local business can post all month.

  2. Offer

    Local Content Starter at $250

One package with a fixed scope and a fixed price, so the first conversation is about the work rather than about the quote.

  3. Proof

    3 sample content batches

Shot for free or for practice, on their own terms. This is what turns the offer into something a stranger can believe.

  4. First 10 clients

Restaurants & cafés, Gyms & studios, Salons & barbers

Named business types, with what they need and where to find them — not a suggestion to post more on Instagram.

  5. Outreach

Ten messages, each built around something you noticed

Each draft names the actual business and what you would shoot for it. Volume is what makes outreach work, so the list comes before the wording.

  6. Result

    4 × $250 = $1,000

4 bookings logged against the plan. Whether it worked is recorded, not assumed — and if it didn't, that is what changes the next recommendation.

Gear

Before you buy another lens.

Almost every photographer who thinks they need one more thing is already carrying enough to get paid. Shotwell checks what you own against what eight kinds of paid work actually require, and tells you the truth either way.

When you are weighing a purchase, it answers the question under the question: not “is this good?” but what would actually be different? Most of the time the honest answer is nothing — and that answer is free.

Audit my gear

No account. Runs in your browser. Nothing is stored.

  1. Your setupA phone, a kit zoom, whatever is actually in the bag.
  2. What it can doCapabilities, not brand names — the same ones the recommendation reads.
  3. What that sellsThe paths those capabilities already cover, today.
  4. Whether to buyWait, consider, or buy — with the arithmetic shown.

What this is not

Shotwell isn't another CRM.

It doesn't try to run your photography business. There is no contract library, no invoicing suite, no client gallery. Plenty of good software already does all of that.

Every one of those tools starts from the same assumption: that you already know what you sell and to whom. Shotwell is for the part before that.

Photography software

Manage the clients you have.

Bookings, contracts, galleries, invoices. Genuinely useful — once there is a business to administer.

Shotwell

Work out what to sell.

One question, answered from what you own and what you can do: what should I do next to make money?

Our stance

You probably don't need another lens.

Most photographers who aren't earning don't have a gear problem. They have an offer problem, a pricing problem, or a nobody-knows-they-exist problem. Buying something new is the easiest way to feel like you're making progress without making any.

So Shotwell checks what your current kit can already do before it says anything about buying. When your gear is enough, it says so and moves on.

  • Every path lists what you can do without buying anything.
  • Purchase analysis shows break-even jobs, not excitement.
  • The default answer is wait.

About 9 months

Your 55-200mm already covers this. Nothing you have booked required f/2.8. Revisit once a client asks for something your current lens genuinely cannot do.

Purchase analysis uses your inputs and assumptions. It is not financial advice.

Your Next $1,000

A number you can actually plan around

Your goal, divided by a realistic starting price, is a client count. That's the whole model — and it's honest about being a model.

Income estimates are examples, not guarantees. Pricing varies by location, experience, service, deliverables and client.

Goal
$1,000 / month
Starting offer
$250
What that means
4 × $250
Four clients this month. Roughly 3 hours each, so about 12 hours of work.
